La Chine, qui organisera les prochains Jeux Olympiques et donc l'événement majeur de 2008 pour l'aviron, vient d'annoncer une manière très originale pour choisir les barreurs des Huits qu'elle compte aligner pour ces J.O.. Tout ça est raconté sur le site de la FISA, retranscrit ici de manière sommaire :
Un mélange de zèle, d'amour nostalgique du sport et un Etat désireux de construire un intérêt national a vu l'avènement de la dernière mode dans les TV réalités : la compétition des barreurs olympiques chinois. Le Show sera retransmis sur la plus importante chaîne chinoise : China Central Television (CCTV). La population entière composée de 1,3 milliard de chinois aura la possibilité de choisir qui sera leur prochain barreur pour leurs Huit Masculin et Féminin Olympique. Similaire aux Shows americains, une combinaison d'un public votant par téléphone et d'un jury professionel rétrécira le nombre de participants de plusieurs centaines de milliers à finalement 16 finalistes. Parmi ces 16 finalistes, 2 vainqueurs deviendront les nouveaux barreurs des équipages chinois !
"C'est la première fois dans l'Histoires de Jeux Olympique que les nouveaux membres d'une équipe Olympique seront découverts par le grand public d'une manière si large et si ouverte," raconte le Vice- Président de l'Administration des Sports Nautiques Chinois, M. Ai Jie Liu.
Le Comité Olympique Chinois (COC) est entièrement derrière ce show, et encourage la population à s'y investir. Cela signifie que les conditions initiales requises sont très ouvertes. N'importe qui entre 16 et 60 ans peut s'inscrire tant qu'il se trouve en bonne santé, est citoyen Chinois ou possède une carte d'identité chinoise valide. Après une période de non participation dans cette discipline, elles revinrent à Athènes, finissant quatrièmes cette fois.
